Wenger set for 2 year Arsenal contract extension and 40m to spend in January
What a difference a weeks make! Last Sunday there
was a general feeling amongst Arsenal fans that
Arsene Wenger was on very thin ice indeed. The
north London derby victory over fierce rivals took
some of that pressure off the Frenchman, but many
fans’ feelings on the manager were on hold until the
transfer window closed.
After the stunning signing of Mesut Ozil from Real
Madrid, it is perhaps not surprising that The Mirror is
today reporting that the 63-year old, who is the
longest serving manager in the Premier League by a
country mile, is to re-open contract talks with the
club.
The paper claims that the Gunners will not only hand
the boss an extra two years to the contract that
expires at the end of this season, but will give him
another transfer war chest of £40 million to use in
the January transfer window. The fact that Ozil has
spoken about how a telephone conversation with
Wenger was key to him deciding to come to the
Emirates, while his players seem to have a fierce
loyalty to him, makes the club’s decision a fairly easy
one.
It does seem only fair, after the Prof got us through
the financially frugal years without dropping out of
the Champions League, to give him an opportunity to
push the team he has built on to the next level. Do
you agree, Gooners?
