Extra: Wenger on CSKA and Arshavin
Arsène Wenger faced the media ahead of the
Premier League clash with Liverpool. Here's
our round-up of the manager's quotes. For the
headlines, visit our Digest page:
on Uefa's decision to close a section of CSKA's
ground…
It's very difficult. First of all I believe it's very positive
that they take action [against racist abuse] and they
show they are sensitive to that subject and they have
my complete support.
Personally, I would like individuals who abuse other
people through racist chants to be published more
than the club. I think today we have the modern
technology to isolate people who chant and I would
personally prefer much more that individually people
become responsible, not only the clubs.
on Arshavin criticising the Emirates
atmosphere...
I always said that we had a difficult period at the
Emirates last season when people were sceptical
about us. They were as well a bit sceptical about him.
They did not give him that support that every player
needs.
I always thought it is down to us to get the crowd on
our side. But since the start of the season, and the
part of the crowd that was noisy after Aston Villa,
they have been massively behind us.

on the team news…
Basically we have just Arteta back because he was
suspended. Gnabry, who was not available for
Tuesday, will not be available again, and all the other
long-term injuries are not back - Walcott,
Chamberlain, Podolski, Diaby.
on Flamini…
He is a short-term injury, he could be available for
Manchester United. He is out for Liverpool and

Wenger on the defeat, mistakes, rotation
Arsène Wenger spoke to the media after the
Chelsea game on Tuesday night. Here is what
he had to say:
on rotating his squad...
I think it was a very tight game that was
decided on one or two mistakes but overall we
cannot play all the games with the same
players, at the some stage you have to rotate.
No, that's not a regret overall - there's a lot of
positives in the game, there is as well
negatives because we lost it and that we
repeated a little bit giving the first goal away.
In the big games you give yourselves a
mountain to climb, especially when you play
against a team who defends well and is good
on the counter-attacks. But overall it was a
game played at a lot of pace where the players
put the effort in.
on what the team lacked…
I think what we lacked is that we were 1-0 down and
in a big game that is giving yourself a very difficult
task to do because you give the opposing team a
chance to counter-attack. We also did not create
enough chances.
on Bendtner's performance…
I do not want to go into the individual assessment of
the players in the press conference. I leave that
between the player and myself.
on the psychological effect of two home
defeats in a week…
Look it's better to win if you ask me. Of course it's
difficult but that's part of the season you know you
will not win all of the games but we have to respond
well on Saturday against Liverpool. We are in a
strong position in the league and we have a good
opportunity at home and we we have to turn this
round because away from home we are very solid but
at home as well you know that it is important and
vital to win the big games.
on the depth of the squad…
Don't go too quickly in the conclusions knowing that
at the moment we have Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain
and Podolski who are out. It's three players who have
a big impact offensively. If you put them in I believe
that it's a completely different position in the team.
on still not beating Mourinho…
I don't think he scored the first goal. Azpilicueta did.
on the defending…
It happens in football unfortunately.
on Emmanuel Frimpong…
No, he said it was a joke. I don't know [that] has he a
problem with England, with anybody else, with
Arsenal. In fact he was on the list to be the 19th
player, he was called up this morning but he was
sick. So for us, he was selected.
on falling behind early…
Yes it is [a worry]. It is not one you can correct, it is
not easy to correct, but it is feasible. We have not to
let that play too much on our minds. Just go into the
next game, play good football and be focused. I think
it made us a bit nervous, because we kicked a few
balls out at the back that were not needed.
on Ju-Young Park…
He was selected because he did well in training
recently. Wigan were interested and I would have
done it but in the end it wasn't realised because we
didn't find an agreement with Wigan.
on facing the big teams…
Let's not jump too quickly to conclusions because if
you take the points we have made since the first of
January, we have made more than anyone else. I
believe that a longer distance reveals more about the
quality of a team than the last few games. It is
difficult to swallow that happened to us in the last
week, but the mistakes are so big that it can be
corrected. We have to keep the basis of our game
and go into it with that and get our mistakes out.
on losing to a top-four rival…
In football it is always difficult to be definite. People
always go quickly to definite conclusions. Against
Aston Villa, we were relegated, we have a revolution
[but] today we are in a strong position in the league.
It is down to how we get rid of those mistakes
without losing belief in our qualities. That is what is
at stake.

Gnabry agrees new long-term contract
Young forward Serge Gnabry has agreed a new
long-term contract with Arsenal Football Club.
The 18-year old Germany youth international has
emerged as one of the brightest young talents in the
Gunners' ranks. He scored his first senior goal for the
Club in the 2-1 Premier League victory over Swansea
City at the Liberty Stadium in September - a week
after making his full Premier League debut against
Stoke City.
Blessed with raw pace and technical skill, Gnabry
signed his first professional contract in the summer
of 2012, having impressed for the under-18 side.
He has technical ability, he has power, he
has pace, he has finishing quality and he
can give a final ball. He's a powerful
offensive player and I believe that he will
be a great player for Arsenal Football Club
Arsène Wenger
He quickly made the step up to senior level during
2012/13, making substitute appearances in the
Premier League at Norwich City and the Champions
League home match against Schalke. In the process
Gnabry became the second youngest Arsenal player -
after Jack Wilshere - to appear in both
competitions.
This season, Gnabry has also featured in the Capital
One Cup - playing the full 120 minutes against West
Bromwich Albion, having made his first competitive
senior start in the same competition last season in a
7-5 win over Reading.
Arsène Wenger said: "We signed Serge Gnabry
because I believe that he will be a great player. He's
nearly there now, and competes for a regular place in
the team in the Premier League.
"He has technical ability, he has power, he has pace,
he has finishing quality and he can give a final ball.
He's a powerful offensive player and I believe that he
will be a great player for Arsenal Football Club."
Gnabry said: "Arsenal is a great football club and I'm
so happy to be here and sign a new contract. For me,
now it's all about working hard and developing my
game.
"I've had some good opportunities recently in the
first team, which has given me extra confidence, and
this will only improve my game. I'm looking forward
to giving my best for this club in the years to come."
Everyone at Arsenal is looking forward to Serge's
continued progression and development with the
Club over the coming years.

Bacary Sagna is subject of the wrath of outspoken Arsenal fan Piers Morgan.
Arsenal lost 2-1 at home to Borussia Dortmund on
Tuesday night and Ian Wright and Roy Keane are
among those to already criticise the players.
Wright claimed Ramsey was 'over confident' leading
up to the first goal, while Keane observed their
toothlessness in attack and naivety at the back.
It would not be an Arsenal game without supporter
Piers Morgan weighing in via Twitter.
He slammed right-back Bacary Sagna for his part in
Dortmund's winner, calling his failure to close down
the Bundesliga side's attack a 'lack of effort'.
I can deal with losing to a very good side, but I
can't deal with lack of effort. I'm talking about you
on that 2nd goal, Mr Sagna. #Afc
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) October 22,
2013
Sagna's contract is up at the end of the season, and
with the Frenchman yet to commit to a new deal - his
relationship with the fans is likely to remain on edge.
The right-back could have got tighter to the
opposition for the goal, but calling his shortcomings
a 'lack of effort' is taking it to another level of
criticism. The one thing a professional never wants to
hear is that he did not try, which in a player like
Sagna's case is surely unlikely.

How Arsenal can learn from defeat by Borussia Dortmund
To quote some of the words of the song, not so long
ago quite a few were wondering whether Arsenal
would still need Arsene Wenger when he was 64.
Arsenal were without a trophy in eight years, many of
the natives were rowdy and restless and plenty were
wondering out loud whether the great alchemist of
his Highbury years had lost the touch forever.
And yet here he was celebrating his 64th birthday
riding a fresh wave of optimism at Emirates Stadium
as Arsenal, top of the Premier League, confronted
last season's losing finalists Borussia
Dortmund
after opening their Champions League campaign
with two wins.
Sadly for Wenger, there was no perfect present as
Arsenal had holes - not a lot but enough - picked in
their resurgence by Jurgen Klopp's Dortmund.
German domination
Arsenal's last three Champions League defeats at
home have been to German clubs. The Gunners loss
was just their fifth in 48 home games in the
Champions League
The pessimists would say Arsenal had failed their
first major test of the season. The far more rational,
and realistic view, is that Wenger's team were
unfortunate to lose 2-1 to one of Europe's best teams
thanks to a late goal by Robert Lewandowski, when
he could just have easily been taking first use of the
shower for an elbow on Laurent Koscielny.
Wenger is normally the great supporter of his players
but here he was arguably the harshest judge as he
accused Arsenal of being "naïve" and "not
being mature enough"
when most agreed many aspects of the display were
worthy of more credit.
Arsenal and Wenger need not be hard on themselves.
This was the performance of a developing team, one
that will suffer setbacks along the way.
There are lessons to be learned, though, and on a
rain-lashed night in north London two of the most
sobering involved Wenger's most influential summer
signings.
Mathieu Flamini was missing after suffering
concussion against Norwich City on Saturday.
Also missing was his ability to shield the back four,
take up crucial positions and also add a ruthless air
to proceedings that might have prevented two rather
soft Dortmund goals.
The first from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the man on which
Liverpool would have loved to have spent
£25m in the summer,
was the result of uncharacteristic ball concession by
Aaron Ramsey on the edge of the area, and the 82nd
minute winner from Lewandowski - while a finish of
some expertise - was aided by slack marking in the
build-up and the final execution.
And then you come to Mesut Ozil.
Ozil made some headlines before kick-off when it was
revealed in Sir Alex Ferguson's lavishly-
publicised "My Autobiography"
that Wayne Rooney, during a period of discontent at
Manchester United, got a flea in his ear from his
manager and told to mind his own business when he
suggested Ferguson should sign the Germany
midfield man.
Arsenal's next five matches
Sat 26 Oct: Crystal Palace (away), Premier League
Tue 29 Oct: Chelsea (home), Capital One Cup
Sat 2 Nov: Liverpool (home), Premier League
Tue 6 Nov: Borussia Dortmund (away), Champions
League
Sun 10 Nov: Manchester United (away), Premier
League
Arsenal's £42.4m signing from Real Madrid has spent
this season providing strong evidence that Rooney
certainly knows a good player when he sees one -
and that he may have been well served offering the
same advice to Ferguson's successor David Moyes.
On this night, Ozil was thwarted by a Bundesliga
team and a German coach in Klopp who know him
well. Give Ozil room and you invite trouble but here,
for the most part, he was confined to small spaces
and his influence was limited.
It is not a case of "stop Ozil and you stop Arsenal" as
they have too many creators for that. It is a reality,
though, that if you can subdue this graceful operator
then you remove one of Wenger's most potent
weapons.
Ozil was only seen in flashes but one pass set up
substitute Santi Cazorla for a shot that glanced off
the woodwork at 1-1.
There are also ongoing concerns over Jack Wilshere's
fitness as he limped off to apply an ice pack to his
ankle only 57 minutes, the result of an awkward first-
half landing.
The result leaves Group F in the balance with Arsenal
still top on the same six points as Dortmund and
Napoli, but with visit to both places to come.
And yet, despite the loss, there should still be plenty
to please Wenger despite his somewhat uncharitable
final analysis.
For 20 minutes Dortmund were the pressing machine
Klopp so desires, relentlessly hunting Arsenal in
possession and denying them any room to play the
passing game that has served them so well in the
Premier League.
Dortmund are on an elevated level from most
opponents Arsenal will face domestically, and it
showed - but there was great resilience to set
alongside the style and Olivier Giroud's equaliser just
before half-time was the reward for hanging in
throughout a torrid opening before imposing their
own influence.
Even in the second half, which ended so
despondently, Arsenal more than matched Dortmund
but the lack of street wisdom Wenger noted let them
down.
Arsenal now have it tough to get out of the
Champions League's most taxing group, but this is
not a result that should dent confidence. They
deserved a point.
Wenger's birthday may not have been a joyous
occasion - but as he indulged in some belated
celebrations he will should still have found aspects of
Arsenal's game to give satisfaction. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24633275

Arsenal 1 Borussia Dortmund 2: We should have taken a draw – Wenger
Arsène Wenger felt his Arsenal side should
have settled for a draw after Robert
Lewandowski's late goal handed Borussia
Dortmund victory and threw Champions
League Group F wide open.
The visitors started the brighter of the two sides in
north London and took the lead in the 16th minute
through Henrikh Mkhitaryan after Aaron Ramsey was
caught in possession on the edge of the box.
Wenger's men worked their way back into the game
and Olivier Giroud slammed home an equaliser
from Bacary Sagna's cross just before half-time.
But the visitors had the final say in north London as
Lewandowski finished off a sweeping counter-attack
in the 82nd minute to leave Dortmund, Napoli and
Arsenal all on six points in Group F.
"It's difficult to take," said Wenger. "Maybe we

Lewandowski's late goal handed Borussia
Dortmund victory and threw Champions
League Group F wide open.
The visitors started the brighter of the two sides in
north London and took the lead in the 16th minute
through Henrikh Mkhitaryan after Aaron Ramsey was
caught in possession on the edge of the box.
Wenger's men worked their way back into the game
and Olivier Giroud slammed home an equaliser
from Bacary Sagna's cross just before half-time.
But the visitors had the final say in north London as
Lewandowski finished off a sweeping counter-attack
in the 82nd minute to leave Dortmund, Napoli and
Arsenal all on six points in Group F.
"It's difficult to take," said Wenger. "Maybe we

the moment we were on top we lost the game
because we wanted to win it so much.

Arsenal target makes decision on future
Arsenal were linked with Jesus Gamez in August, but
the defender has just put pen to paper on a new
contract.
Another possible right-back target for Arsenal is now
off their radar.
Malaga captain Jesus Gamez, who was linked by The
Independent in August with a move to Arsenal for
cash plus Nicklas Bendtner.
The Andaluscians' lack of interest in Bendtner
scuppered that deal, with Cazorla and Monreal's
former teammate remaining at Malaga.
Football Espana report that Gamez has penned a
three-and-a-half year contract extension including an
amendment to his current deal, which will take him
up to the summer of 2017.
Interest in Gamez, 28, could have been re-visited in
light of full-back Bacary Sagna's failure to so far sign
a contract extension with the Gunners.
The right-back has made nine appearances for
Malaga this season with one assist to his name.

FLAMINI RULED OUT OF DORTMUND CLASH
ARSENAL MIDFIELDER MATHIEU FLAMINI WILL
MISS THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CLASH AGAINST
BORUSSIA DORTMUND, MANAGER ARSENE
WENGER HAS CONFIRMED.The 29-year-old returned to Arsenal this summer
after five seasons with AC Milan and he has been one
of the unsung heroes in the middle of the park as the
Gunners sit pretty on top of the Premier League
table.
With all the plaudits going to fellow midfielders
Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil, Flamini has been
effectively shielding the back four so that the
offensive players can do their job of scoring goals.
However, in what will be a massive blow to Wenger,
the combative midfielder has been ruled out of the
all-important Champions League encounter against
Borussia Dortmund, last season's runners-up to
Bayern Munich.
According to Sky Sports, Wenger has confirmed that
Flamini will sit out the Dortmund match. He said,
"Flamini is doing well, has practiced normally, but we
will not play him tomorrow."
He added, "There is a five days (concussion) rule that
we will respect, not to take any chance. It was a
concussion and the doctor advised us not to play
him. He will be okay for the weekend. I'll leave myself
24 hours until tomorrow afternoon to decide the
team."

Parlour explains why Flamini is Pivotal
Over the past couple of years Arsenal have often
been labelled as a 'one man team'. Firstly it was the
ending era of Henry, before turning to Fabregas and
then to Van Persie. Last season Cazorla was largely
known as our saviour but this year I think it's safe to
say that we finally possess lots of top class talent at
the club.
The likes of Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey have
transformed into completely different players from
previous years whilst we also have the top talent of
Santi Cazorla and new boy Mesut Ozil. But who would
have thought it would be a certain Frenchman who
re-joined the club in the summer after 5 years in
Milan that would eventually turn out to be the 'man
who could win Arsenal the league' according to one
Arsenal legend.
Ray Parlour said, "Flamini has been a massive
signing. The midfield has always been very good, but
they were all very similar players. The likes of (Santi)
Cazorla, (Mikel) Arteta are really good on the ball, but
they had no one in there bossing everyone around.
Now suddenly Flamini has gone in there and he is
starting to pull people around. Before he left for AC
Milan he was fantastic. Now he is doing a very similar
role and giving it to Ozil, Cazorla. He has been a real
unsung hero so far. These sort of players do their
jobs well but go unseen. He has been a really
important player that has come into the club and
gone on from where he left. He could be the
difference this season."
I think a lot of people would have thought that Ozil
would be the man behind the winning combination
and although of course his importance to this win
streak is undeniable, as is the entire team's in fact, I
think Flamini has been quite a hidden gem so far this
season, and he could well be the reason for why we
are being far more dominating and controlling in
games for longer periods and not losing focus like we
used to. With Flamini's addition could Arsenal really
go onto win the Premier League?

Wenger Insists Arsenal Have “Special Hunger” To Win Trophies
Arsene Wenger insists that his current Arsenal squad
have the "special hunger" to win a trophy this
season.
The Gunners currently sit top of the table.
The Frenchman said: "The feel-good factor is down to
the quality of the spirit in the team, the solidarity of
the players and their desire to do well. We are a team
that looks to be successful and for that you need a
special hunger and I believe that these players have
it.
"For our confidence, it is good [to be scoring goals]
and being in the position we are and knowing we
have room for improvement is, of course, a good
feeling.
"I believe you can improve. What makes a top level
team is that search for improvement and I believe
that collectively, the way we win the ball back and
the use of the ball offensively, we have room for
improvement."

Arsene Wenger Hails Jack Wilshere’s ‘Exceptional’ Goal Against Norwich
Arsene Wenger has described that the opening goal
from Jack Wilshire in Arsenal's 4-1 Premier League
win over Norwich City as one of the best he had seen
in his 17 years at the north London club.
The England international midfielder volleyed home
in the 18th minute after exchanging four quick
passes with Olivier Giroud.
New signing Mesut Ozil scored twice and Aaron
Ramsey grabbed his ninth of the season to help
Arsenal to a two-point lead at the top of the table.
"All the four goals were great but the first was
exceptional," Wenger told a post-match news
conference.
"It was one of the best in my time here for sure."

MInd The Gap: Arsenal Extend Lead At Top Of Table
Arsenal are two points clear at the top of the Premier
League after a majestic 4-1 win over Norwich at the
Emirates Stadium today.
Some will discount the win because the opponents
were Norwich, but that would do the Gunners a
disservice as they were brilliant today.
With Wilshere, Ozil, Cazorla and Ramsey simply
brilliant, Arsenal put on a passing display that would
have not looked out of place at the Camp Nou or
Allianz Arena.
Ramsey has been so good this season, while Wilshere
played in a more central role today and had maybe
his best game of the season. Cazorla made his return
from injury and slotted in perfectly in midfield while
Ozil was Ozil.
Some of the goals Arsenal scored today were
breathtaking. The first one from Wilshere has to be a
contender for goal of the season. Wilshere broke up a
Norwich attack on the edge of the Arsenal box, but as
the Gunners brought the ball forward, Norwich had
plenty of men behind the ball as the ball came to
Cazorla on the edge of the penalty area.
But the Gunners cut through the Norwich defence
with a sublime series of one-touch passes First
Cazorla pulled the ball back out to Wilshere, who
played a quick pass into Giroud. His return pass was
flicked straight back by the England man and in turn
touched forward by the France striker into Wilshere's
path as he carried onto to the six-yard box before
clipping a low shot past Ruddy.
The second goal was not bad either. After soaking up
Norwich pressure, Arsenal scored with a classic
counter-attacking move. Cazorla sprinted into the
Norwich half before feeding Giroud on the right.
Giroud looked up and chipped a perfectly-weighted
ball across the Norwich penalty area, where Ozil
arrived on cue to get in between the defenders and
glance a header into the far corner.
Norwich got one back to make it interesting for a
while before Ramsey settled any late nerves when he
cut into the six-yard box and fired past Ruddy.
Then two minutes from time, Ozil scored again,
tapping-in from a cutback by Ramsey at the far post.
