Vermaelen happy with return to action

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has revealed
that he is pleased with the return into action after
missing last three months through a back problem.
The Belgian has missed most of pre-season training
as well as the opening exchanges, making his first
appearance in the 3-1 victory at Sunderland.
Vermaelen was then handed a start in the Capital
One Cup match against West Brom, and he
completed full 120 minutes at the Hawthorns.
The player now reveals that he was quite happy with
his first start this season and pretty much surprised
by how he felt in the aftermath of the match.
"Two hours of football was a challenge for me
after three months out, but I was really happy to
come through it and was actually quite surprised
at how I well I felt in the couple of days
afterwards," Vermaelen told Arsenal's official
matchday programme.
"It wasn't easy, of course, but I felt good
physically. I worked hard during my injury so I am
happy with how things have turned out."
With Arsenal set to square off against Serie A high-
flyers Napoli in the Champions League tonight, it is
highly unlikely the Belgian will be risked, but his
returnshould come in handy as the likes of
Mertesacker and Koscielny will soon be in need of
rest.
The 27-year-old is going to need a while before he
reaches 100% and rediscovers his form, but there
will be plenty of matches for him to get that much
needed playing time.
