Gnabry’s goal to earn him Arsenal place for Sunderland?
The Arsenal under-21 side were in action last night at
the Emirates, and they put in an impressive
performance to beat a strong West Brom side by 1 –
0. The goal was a stunning volley from the young
German player Serge Gnabry, and it may just have
booked him a seat on the coach going up to
Sunderland for the Premier League game tomorrow.
The other young players that will be hoping for a
place on the Arsenal bench tomorrow are Emmanuel
Frimpong, Ryo Miyaichi and Chuba Akpom. All four
played last night, and only Akpom completed the
match, suggesting that Ryo, Gnabry and Frimpong
are being considered. Obviously they wouldn’t be
expected to start a Premier League game so soon
after playing for around an hour last night, but we all
know that Arsene Wenger’s options are severely
restricted due to various players being injured.
There are seven substitutes available for Wenger.
Three of these places will be taken up by the keeper
and full backs. There is also a chance that Thomas
Vermaelen could be named in the squad. The
versatility of Sagna comes in handy here, with him
being able to replace one of the centre backs if
necessary. Now we also have Flamini, who I expect to
start tomorrow. He can always drop into the left or
right back position, so I would think the last three or
four substitute positions will be filled with more
attacking options.
Gnabty’s ability to play on the left or right of the
forward three makes him favourite for one of the
places, in my opinion. Wilshere will be there if he
doesn’t start, so then it becomes a choice between
Frimpong or Ryo. I would have taken the out and out
striker Akpom, but him playing the whole game
yesterday tells me that is not going to happen. What
do you think Gooners?
