Arsenal keeper transfer news – Guzan and Macey

The transfer rumours linking Arsenal with a large
number and wide variety of goalkeepers has been
going on for some time now, but they were especially
fervent this summer. It is understandable really,
because of the somewhat erratic performances of the
young Polish international keeper Wojciech Szczesny,
and the sale of Vito Mannone.
When the 27-year old Italian Emiliano Viviano was
brought in on loan for the season in the last few days
of the transfer window, it appeared that Wenger was
happy to keep faith with Szczesny, and he has not
been disappointed so far. The 23-year old is looking
as sharp as he ever has and has spoken about how
the wake-up call he got when Wenger dropped him
last season has done its job.
But the keeper situation is back in the news. The
Mirror has reported that Arsenal are keen on the
American international Brad Guzan who has been so
impressive for Aston Villa this season. The 29-year
old has fought for years to become the first choice for
club and country, usually without success, but he has
finally done it under Paul Lambert.
However, I don't really see him as a really top class
keeper in the class of Begovic. The only reason I can
see for signing Guzan would be as stronger
competition for Szczesny. But after finally getting the
number one jersey, why would Guzan move to be an
understudy again? If he was content with that, it
would be a great signing, but I don't think anything
will come of this story, personally.
There is a keeper that is coming to the Emirates by
the looks of things, but he is more for the future than
right now. 18-year old Matt Macey has come through
the youth system at Bristol Rovers and his
impressive performances have attracted interest
from a number of Premier League clubs, according to
Sky Sports. Apparently Macey had an Arsenal trial
last month and is soon set to sign a three year
contract with the Gunners.
Bristol Rovers have apparently accepted their
inability to hold on to their talented youngster, but
they will get compensation for developing him.
