Dear fellow gooners, It comes to no surprise that the
signing of Ozil and Arsenal's current brilliant form at
top of the league has turned many a head in the
football industry, including an Arsenal hero and
legend, Dennis Bergkamp. In an interview with
Telegraph Sport, he spoke about the positive
transformation Arsenal has begun to undertake and
how he wishes to be a part of that. Currently he is the
assistant coach at Ajax, but in the interview he states
that he always had plans to return to Arsenal one day
and continue his legacy with us.
This is what he had to say, "The feeling Johan Cruyff
has had for Barcelona, I have the same with Arsenal.
"At Arsenal it was a good click. I always enjoyed it. I
never had a bad day there. It is always on my mind. It
is part of my ambition to come back at some stage.
"I can't really plan ahead. I know I will be here [at
Ajax] for at least another three or five years and then
I don't know. I don't see myself being at Ajax for the
rest of my coaching degree. I don't see myself as a
manager.
"I see myself as being part of the coaching staff. I
really enjoy that role, especially the individual
training with the strikers.
"I've spoken to or have heard about others [former
Arsenal colleagues] who would also love to come
back.
"Steve Bould is there now which is excellent. I've
spoken to Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry would love
to come back to Arsenal one day. Tony [Adams] is a
big option as well."
In the interview, he was asked his opinion about Ozil
and how people have already noted similarities
between the two of them.
Bergkamp replied, "I don't like comparing. We're all
unique. But I do understand the similarities people
see and I believe he can be very important to the
team.
"It is still early days. He is a tremendous player with
a lot of effective skills like controlling the ball,
making creative passes and assists, taking the right
position in the field every time. And he's extremely
experienced.
"Putting all that together I think you've got a player
who can be the missing link in the Arsenal team, a
player who will make a striker score goals, who will
link up in Arsenal's position-game and who will score
goals as well."
"Behind every pass there must be a thought", as he
puts it. And Arsenal's new assist-meister is clearly a
fellow-believer.
"Özil knows exactly how to control the ball in what
kind of space to give himself time. That's the
difference between the players and great players.
With his intelligence and his touch and his skills, he
is trying to do something right with every ball."
This is why I have made such a big fuss over the
signing of Ozil, because good things like this are
going to happen. It has opened so many doors for our
club, not only do we have a better chance of winning
some silverware, but once again we are an attractive
club to top players and legends who want to be a
part of what we all know is going to be massive.
Having Dennis back would be a major boost for the
club, not just because he is a cult hero, but because
the vast amount of wisdom he has about the game
would be imparted to all our players. Also, Wenger is
not getting any younger and he will need a
replacement sooner or later. Perhaps when the time
comes, Bergkamp would have been with us long
enough as a coach to be able to take the reins? Just a
thought. Will be great to have you back either way
Dennis!
Best regards
