I have seen that a lot of Arsenal fans still think we
need a new striker if we are going to seriously
challenge for the Premier League or in fact any
trophy this season and therefore its vital that another
star player, this time in the strikers department,
comes to the club this January.
In the summer transfer window just gone, Arsenal
have been linked with the likes of Wayne Rooney,
Luis Suarez and Karim Benzema, also not forgetting
Gonzalo Higuain who was supposedly very close to
joining from Real Madrid before signing for
Champions League group opponents Napoli. All of
those players are very big names and no doubt
strikers of the highest quality, however I doubt any of
them would be available for purchase in January and
so if we want to have another striker for our front line
then we may have to settle for something less, or is
the answer already at our club?
Lukas Podolski has never really managed to get
himself off and running at Arsenal since joining back
in the summer of 2012. He started off with a great
impression, however as the season progressed his
spark began to die out, with rising concerns over his
fitness. Then again at the beginning of this season,
he again failed to make a good impression and was
made a bench player before a fantastic game against
Fulham, where he scored two great goals, fired his
name right back into the limelight. Unfortunately for
him and Arsenal, Podolski then picked up an injury
that has ruled him out for 6 weeks of the season so
far.
But upon his return could he really pose a threat to
Giroud's position? I think Podolski holds talent
because we have seen him perform extraordinary
feats with both Koln and Arsenal at club level, as well
as on the international stage with Germany, however
I must admit after a year at the club, he still hasn't
convinced me that he can be the player we all
expected him to be.
There is no doubt he will be a vital asset to this side
this season, and he can certainly pop up with a
couple of important goals, however I don't think he
has what it takes to lead the front line because his
style just doesn't fit the Arsenal way down the
middle. Although, he would now have his
international team mate Ozil creating chances for
him.
I think it's very important we invest in another striker
this January, especially if we are still very much in
contention for a trophy. Podolski's return will prove
good for the club however to take us to another new
level, just like with Ozil, then we must bring in a star
striker this January to lead or at least compete
alongside Giroud in that Arsenal front line! What are
your thoughts on this?
