Arsenal finally looking for some defensive reinforcements
Arsenal are expected to put in a bid for Basel
defender Fabian Schar in the upcoming transfer
window as the young Swiss has climbed to the top of
Wenger’s defensive wish list, reported the Metro.
Arsenal’s defence has been suspect for the past two
seasons or so, and given that Bacary Sagna, who is a
right back, had to deputise in the centre of defence in
a few games for Arsenal just goes on to show the
extent of problems in the Arsenal backline courtesy
injuries and lack of transfer activity.
However, the purchase of Schar will surely stabilise
the North London club’s defence and also provides a
goal threat from set pieces for Wenger’s team. The
centre back, who stands well above the 6 ft. mark, is
a prolific header and has already scored thrice in 3
appearances for the Swiss national team. Even for
Basel, the 21 year old has netted as many as 6 times
for the Swiss champions and was a key defensive
presence for his team in their 2-1 victory against
2012 Champions League winners Chelsea at
Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal will however face competition from Serie A
giants Juventus and Napoli in the race for Schar.
Napoli, in fact, seemed close to snapping up the
defender in the previous transfer market itself and
are keen to add the Swiss to their new project under
Rafael Benitez.
