Flamini snubbed Milan contract and other clubs before rejoining Arsenal

There was a point in the summer transfer window, about two weeks ago, when many Arsenal fans were going around as if they were filled with nitro- glycerine. The club had just made their second signing of the summer, but there was a lot of anger about it being another free transfer. The fact that it was a former Gunner, who many feel abandoned the club five years ago, who was out of contract did not help. However, contrary to popular belief at the time, Flamini had not been released by his Serie A club AC Milan. The midfielder had reached the end of his contract with them, but was offered a new one, while also attracting interest from some other clubs around Europe, as this report in Metro reveals. Flamini told France Football, “Milan asked me to extend my contract for two years. “However, at 29-years old I didn’t want to sign anything less than three seasons. I had other opportunities in Italy where clubs other than Milan contacted me, as well as from sides in Germany and England. “At this stage of my career it was an important choice, so I took time to think. To maintain my fitness I decided to train with Arsenal and over time the deal unfolded. “The fact that Arsene Wenger is still at the club was an important part of my decision. He knows me very well and has played a big role in my career. “He introduced me to the best league, the Premier League, and has taught me on many levels, tactical, technical and mental.” When Flamini replaced Jack Wilshere in the second half of the north London derby against Tottenham, he soon showed any doubters that he was back with a bang. His second debut showed him to be fit, aggressive and committed to the Arsenal cause. He also proved that we would be a real leader on the field. Maybe he feels he owes the club, the fans and especially Wenger. Maybe he just feels that he wants to make the most out of the rest of his playing career. Whatever the reason, Arsenal are going to feel the benefit of his decision to refuse the other offers and bide his time.
