Go Get Suarez, Giroud tells Arsenal
Giroud wants competition at Arsenal! by Ash
Arsenal had a very productive summer in the end
with the signings of Mesut Ozil and Emiliano Viviano
being completed on transfer deadline day, and then
the signings of young striker Yaya Sanogo, and ex-
Gunner Mathieu Flamini also arriving earlier in the
summer. But one area of the pitch Arsenal largely
failed to strengthen in was in attack, and with the
window now closed we have been left with just one
main central striker at our helm.
Olivier Giroud is that very man and he has had a
fantastic start to the season with 5 goals so far this
season, 4 of which have been in the league, however
with recent concerns over his fitness, its put our
squad shortage into perspective as we now realise
even more so that we need another striker.
Over the course of the summer we were linked with
several big name strikers, with the likes of Wayne
Rooney, Gonzalo Higuain, Karim Benzema and Luis
Suarez all on our radar at some point. And it’s the
latter name there that seemed to gather the most
attention, in a transfer saga that lasted at least a
month. Of course the deal never same off however
one man that was particularly disappointed with that
news was Arsenal player Olivier Giroud himself,
according to a report in The Mirror.
The French striker said, “When the name of Suarez
was circulating, I honestly thought it was a good
thing for the team. We would’ve complemented each
other. Suarez can also play out wide. We would have
been in direct competition because he is a pure
central striker. Of course, at the time, it would have
bothered me a bit but I was not afraid of
competition.”
Despite Suarez’s past, at one point every single
Arsenal fan considered what it could have been like
having Suarez in an Arsenal shirt. The deal never
came off and although nobody was really too
disappointed, it meant that yet another target had
been lost and ultimately it could have been that deal
stalling which caused problems over Higuain.
There have been some reports that Arsenal may
return for Suarez in January, and although I think this
is highly unlikely, with just Walcott and Podolski in
the background before we reach the likes of
Bendtner, Akpom and Sanogo, I think it’s vital we
sign another striker in the next window.
