As you probably know already, the former Arsenal
star Robert Pires is back at the Club. Arsene Wenger
has not re-signed the 39-year old midfielder, but
after the summer saga with Mathieu Flamini earning
himself a new contract by impressing the manager,
you never know. Maybe Pires was encouraged by that
situation to try his luck, who knows?
However, what I think is that he could have a big
influence for the Gunners this season simply by
being around the current crop of players. Pires was a
unique kind of player, who had a fantastic knack of
being in the right place at the right time, assisting
and scoring crucial goals as well as being a fighter
and a winner. If a little bit of that can rub off on the
likes of Mesut Ozil, Gnabry, Miyaichi and Eisfeld, it
would be fantastic.
Look, I am not having a go at our record signing, but
it is clear that the rough and tumble of the Premier
League is not what he is used to, and it could take
him time, like Mertesacker, Podolski, Giroud and
many more, to be comfortable with English football
and start producing his best form on a regular basis.
So how can Pires help? Because he went through
exactly the same thing.
I am thinking about Wenger's anecdote about
keeping Pires on the bench after he had first joined.
It was an away day, at Sunderland I think, and Pires
watched in something close to horror as they got
stuck right into the Gunners, and asked the boss
something like `is it always like this`? It took the
talented Frenchman a while to find his feet, but when
he did he never looked back. I think it could be the
same with Ozil. We have seen flashes of brilliance,
but also seen him muscled off the ball or drifting out
of games, so if Pires can help him to settle quickly, it
could prove to be invaluable for us this season. What
do you think Gooners?
