Jens Lehmann 'We were world class in every area'
Jens Lehmann sits in one of the media rooms
at the Arsenal Training Centre, with a
photograph of the 2003/04 'Invincibles' team
on the wall behind him. It's an appropriate
backdrop.
A decade ago, Arsenal and their new German
goalkeeper had embarked on a record-breaking
campaign which would, in the eyes of many,
establish them as the best team in Premier League
history.
It was the perfect start to life in London for Lehmann.
Thirty-eight matches played, 26 won, 12 drawn and
none lost. In fact, it took 48 league games before the
indomitable stopper was finally on the losing side in
a league game in England.
An FA Cup title would follow in 2005 before Lehmann
formed the crux of the Arsenal defence which kept 10
consecutive clean sheets en route to a Champions
League final meeting with Barcelona a year later,
crucially saving Villarreal playmaker Juan Roman
Riquelme's late penalty to secure Arsenal's place in
Paris.
