Szczesny vows to fight for his place as Arsenal’s Number One
I am not going to be too hard on Arsenal’s Polish international keeper Wojciech Szczesny. After all, he is still only 23-years old and has put in some stunning performances for the Gunners since making his first team debut against West Brom in a 2009 league cup game. Coincidentally, that could well be the same team that the new Gunners keeper Emiliano Viviano debuts against in the Capital One cup next month. Szczesny has been talking about how being dropped last season, due to a poor run of form, has made him realise what it takes to keep his position at a big club like Arsenal, and I suspect that Arsene Wenger’s signing of an ambitious keeper of quality will have made him realise that he really cannot afford to relax this season. Szczesny told Arsenal player, “It wasn’t nice – you want to be playing every week. But then again the most important thing is the team. “I worked really hard to get back into the team, and when I did I thought I did pretty well. It was a good decision by the manager. “Hopefully I can be the club’s number 1 this season. It is important. I want to win a trophy because that is what is missing in my career, and I’m sure it is what the fans have been missing. It’s a big season.” The young keeper also revealed that being dropped stung him into coming to training early and really focusing on getting in top condition and forcing his way back into the first team. That is what you want from all the players in a talented squad, and hopefully it is a great sign that Szczesny has put the mistakes of the past behind him.
