Wenger slams Real Madrid claims about Arsenal star Ozil
Arsene Wenger has always been protective about the
players under his authority at Arsenal Football Club,
sometimes against all logical reasoning, but he has
good reason for his latest statement backing the
club’s record signing against the continuing
derogatory suggestions coming from Mesut Ozil’s
former club Real Madrid.
According to a report in the Telegraph, Madrid
president Florentino Perez’ latest attack on the
German international was to suggest that Ozil could
not handle the pressure at the Bernabeu and that
was why he chose to leave.
Wenger stopped short of calling Perez a liar, merely
saying he was `surprised` by the comments, but he
made it clear that this was not the case, and it was
the decision of Madrid to sell one of their best
players. He also hinted that Madrid were simply
trying to cover themselves. When you look at the
figures of Ozil since moving to La Liga, playing 53
games, 52 games and 52 games in the three seasons
he was there and confirming himself as the assist
king of Europe, the claims of Perez seem to hold
water as well as a sieve with extra large holes.
Wenger said in response to Perez, “I have not seen
that at all. He is 24, he has over 50 caps for Germany,
and when you play for Germany, you are under a lot
of pressure.
“He won the championship with Real Madrid, and
that is a club where there is a lot of pressure.”
He was also under the very demanding Jose
Mourinho for all his time in Spain, and the
Portuguese manager is not well known for his
sympathy towards any player he feels is not pulling
his weight. On the contrary, Mourinho had nothing
but high praise for Ozil, so I think Perez should forget
about Ozil, who is an Arsenal player, and worry about
his own club because he is making himself look
stupid and petty.
