Having played over 450 games for Arsenal between
1992 and 2004 at the heart of midfield, Ray Parlour
is as qualified as anyone to assess the current crop of
Gunners. And `the Romford Pele` likes what he is
seeing, and feels that there is plenty of strength in
depth as well as talent to fire the Gunners to a strong
season.
Parlour won three league titles, four FA cups and one
league cup with Arsenal, so it must be as painful for
him as it is for us to see eight long years of trophy
drought. Now, however, with the signings of Mesut
Ozil and Mathieu Flamini, as well as the resurgence
of Aaron Ramsey, the former Gunner is even
comparing us to Barcelona.
Parlour said to Arsenal player, "It's looking very
strong, no matter who starts. There is so much depth
in the midfield with Mikel Arteta, Mathieu – who has
been a great signing – Ozil, Jack Wilshere, Oxlade-
Chamberlaon and Cazorla – so its a real headache for
the manager.
"Aaron Ramsey's been the player of the season so
far. He's been superb with the goals he's scored but
the whole midfield are very adaptive now.
"At the moment Ramsey's guaranteed a place in my
team, Flamini as well in the way he's playing in that
holding role. Then its who plays around them? Ozil
obviously is going to play behind the front and then
you've got Cazorla, who had a great season last year,
so I'm sure he'll be back in the side as well.
"When you look at teams like Barcelona, their
midfield has always been the most important part of
their game, so hopefully Arsenal will be very similar."
Parlour even forgot to mention the considerable
talents of Abou Diaby and Tomas Rosicky, who make
the midfield even stronger. And, apart from Diaby,
Arsene Wenger will soon have all those players to
choose from. A selection headache, yes, but what a
great one to have.
