Is Walcott’s goal drought a serious concern for Arsenal?
What’s happened to Walcott? by Ash
Theo Walcott cried out to become Arsenal’s highest
earner last season because not only did he feel he
should be paid on par with the rest of the regular
England international players but he also felt his
importance to the team was a vital aspect of our
success.
Many will disagree and I certainly do in saying that
Walcott is vital to our success, but never the less he
is now one of the more experienced players in the
side and ultimately when he is on form he is
definitely worth the £100k a week that he now earns.
That’s the problem though, he is rarely on form and
right now we are seeing a Walcott that once again is
failing to score a goal.
In fact, despite scoring 21 goals for the Gunners last
season, Walcott has failed to score in all of Arsenal’s
games this season, just showing how much of a bad
run of form he is in. Not only that but his assists are
also drying up, leaving his place on the team a factor
to be questioned.
Walcott doesn’t offer much in reality. He can have a
good shot on him and pick up a few goals, but
ultimately all he revolves around is his pace and I
don’t know if anyone would agree but I even think
he’s starting to lose that. I don’t know if it’s because
he is getting older (although of course 24 is still
young) or maybe he has bulked up in the sense that
he can be more physical in the game but whatever
the reason is, I have noticed that he seems
considerably slower that he was and therefore
perhaps that’s the main fault behind his game.
Beforehand the only reason why he was scoring was
because he could get a break away from the
defenders and then coolly finish, however if he
doesn’t even have the pace or physicality to get past
the players then what hope does he have now?
Yesterday was a key example, because Mesut Ozil
played several fanatic balls to Walcott which in
previous years he would have rounded off as a goal,
but on both main occasions he failed to show any real
strike of the ball and the keeper saved both
attempts. The cross from Wilshere was different
because although many would score that Walcott
isn’t really known as a great header of the ball and so
I exempt his mistake there but he cannot be let off
for those other two chances.
Sure, everyone has a bad game once in a while,
however with Walcott it’s more likely to be a bad
season, and every season too. Once the Ox comes
back I think it’s time for a review on Walcott but I can
be certain in saying, I think Wenger will have doubts
about benching someone who is on £100k a week!
What are your thoughts on Theo, Gooners?
