Wenger won't sign Arsenal deal unless he delivers glory
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he will
judge his success on the pitch before deciding
whether to extend his contract when it expires
at the end of the season.
Unrest was growing at the Emirates until the
Frenchman splashed out £42.5million to bring in
German star Mesut Ozil.
But having spent big, this year is viewed as a pivotal
one for the 63-year-old and the Gunners as they aim
to end an eight-year trohpy drought.
"In the end I will sit down and think 'how well
have I done with the team I have had?' "
Arsene Wenger
He said: "We are in no hurry. We are in September
and my contract finishes in June. There is a long way
to go.
"There is no need to plan (any talks). I have said
many times I want to do well with this club and in the
end I will sit down and think 'how well have I done
with the team I have had?'
"That has to be sufficient for me to decide yes or no.
"One of the main judgments you can have about a
manager is how well he does with his team."
Before Ozil's signing things looked bleak for Wenger
with moves for Gonzalo Higuain, Luis Suarez and
Yohan Cabaye all failing and a 3-1 home defeat to
Aston Villa on the opening day making matters
worse.
But the Frenchman was relieved to finally prove to
the Arsenal faithful he was prepared to spend and
showed how he can sway players with Ozil paying
tribute to his new manager for convincing him to
sign
.
"When I told you two or three days before (the
transfer deadline), I looked a bit lonely when I said I
was optimistic, but in the end it happened," he
added.
"I thought we had a chance to do it, a small one, but
we worked very hard on it until the end.
"Before the game I knew we were 90% there. What is
very important for us is to find world-class players.
There are not plenty around."
In what could be seen as a sly dig at free spending
rivals such as Tottenham, Wenger also pointed out
how successful Arsenal had been under strict
financial limitations.
"We had to go through some years when I signed a
long-term contract where we had some restricted
financial potential, and the target was to stay in the
Champions League in this period.
"We managed to do it, and we are now in a strong
position financially."
