Olivier Giroud put in a very good shift as Arsenal beat
Napoli 2-0 in a crucial home game in the UEFA
Champions League last night. Giroud helped create
the first, and also started the move for the second
goal, that he eventually scored. Apart from the goals,
Giroud's hold up play was top notch as he brought
the scintillating Arsenal midfield into play. Giroud
scored his 6th goal of the season in 10 appearances
and he seems to be carrying on from his wonderful
pre-season with the club. He looks fit and strong, and
ready for battle whenever he wears the club's
colours.
However, it is the Gunners' record breaking signing,
Mesut Ozil, who stole the show last night. He scored
a wonderful first goal for his new club, effortlessly
guiding an Aaron Ramsey pass into the back of the
net from 18 yards out. He then managed to
penetrate into the Napoli penalty box before finding
Giroud for the second goal.
Ozil has lifted the entire Arsenal team who now have
won 10 games in a row after their opening day
debacle against Aston Villa. He has not only brought
belief back into an otherwise talented squad, but also
got the fans to believe in the club and it's title
aspirations.
Speaking to the clubs official website about Ozil,
Giroud said yesterday, "Mesut was unbelievable
tonight, as usual, it is really simple to find him on the
pitch and we have a really good understanding on
the pitch. He assisted on my goal and he always does
the right thing in the right moment. This is his fifth
assist since he joined us and I think he was the man
we needed to really improve ourselves. He has
incredible technique and he did very well tonight. His
goal is quite difficult to score because he was far
[from the goal], he had really good precision in his
shot.I have the same [understanding] with Jack and
Tomas and Aaron and Theo as well so I'm really
pleased to play with these kinds of players."
Giroud has been arguably one of Arsenal's best
players along with Ramsey, Flamini and Ozil. He
credits his excellent form to the fact that he has now
adjusted to life in England and he is now confident
after a prolific pre-season. Even at Montpellier,
Giroud needed a season to find his feet after which
he became Ligue 1's top scorer in a season that saw
Montpellier beat the likes of PSG, Lyon and Marseille
to the league title.
"From the start of the season I have more confidence
and I am settled well now in the team and in my new
English life," he told the club's official website, "I feel
really good on the pitch and I want to improve
myself.
"It's true [that I improve in my second season],
because in Montpellier I really improved myself for
the second season and I finished top scorer and we
won the league. I agree with him [Arsène Wenger]
and I want to show I can learn from my first season
and improve myself here."
